Belchertown

I was on a day trip to the Quabbin Reservoir and on the way there, driving through Belchertown heading for a charging station, I noticed a place with neon1 ice cream cones in the window. I looked it up and it wasn't on my list! Turns out it's primarily smashburgers, hotdogs, and fried chicken, but they have ice cream right up front as you walk in.

They serve Hershey's, which tends to have interesting flavors but tastes a tiny bit less creamy and less dense than Richardson's. They have a range of cup sizes labelled in scoops and ounces. A 5-scoop large isn't overwhelming like it is at many other places (still a lot of ice cream though), their "scoops" are a little small - they're also priced lower than most places I review, so you should just order more!

They have soft serve and sundaes; I didn't spot a specific topping list but based on the sundae list they have hot fudge and reeses pieces, and of course they had chocolate jimmies. They had shakes and slushies (8 flavors plus some twist combinations) and "Twisters".

Krispy's has decent outdoor parking and a bunch of indoor booths and tables. They also have outdoor benches and a few picnic tables - there are signs for a "walking trail" in that corner of the parking lot, which might be part of the Lake Wallace Sensory Trail. They don't have a walk-up serving window, but they do have a very busy drive-up, which was getting a lot of ice cream orders when I was there - half an hour before closing time, they had three people just doing ice cream via headsets, one of them switched off to take my counter order. Well-handled but quite busy!

The other ice cream sign visible from the road says they're hiring - probably ramping up for summer, given how busy they are before it's even Memorial Day. I didn't catch this clever ice-cream-cone-shaped chalkboard until I got to the front door - the neon1 is definitely the reason I noticed the place.

The ice cream

I got a medium (4 scoop) cup of "Cappuchino Crunch" with chocolate jimmies. More distinct from coffee icecream than I expected, it also had crunchy caramel bits and a little bit of chocolate swirl.

Next Visit

Next time I might try a "PB Cup Bang" sundae (I just noticed that all of their sundaes have "Bang", "Blast", or "Explosion" in the name.) The Green Mint Chip looks good too. I expect to be in the area later this summer for more photography at Quabbin Reservoir, and while there are more ice cream places nearby this is the one that serves food too, so I expect I'll be back!

  1. I know, it's the 21st century, they're LED light pipes and only evoking neon.
