Bolton

Stumbled across another ice cream list, from back in May; this one selects one flavor per state. For Massachusetts, the choice was "PB Banana Fluff Ice Cream" from New City Microcreamery because Fluff itself is from Somerville and is still celebrated annually. While this wasn't a direct plan, I did scan the map for the nearest shops that I hadn't visited, one of which was Bolton Orchards. It was listed as a "farm stand with some ice cream windows in the back" I checked google to see if it had summer ice cream shop hours... and was startled to see a New City Microcreamery right next to it.

Turns out that the back section of the main Bolton Orchards building has been a New City since May 2026. There are two outside serving windows and a bunch of picnic tables with umbrellas, but it looks like there is also indoor service and freezers (not sure about the seating, though.) While New City is itself open until 9pm, Bolton Orchards closes at 5pm, so I didn't get much of a view of the inside operations.

The menu matches the previous ones, aside from a few things they were temporarily out of; they did have Baklava and Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch, and they had the same "Allergy Key" markings on the chalkboard menus. They did have soft-serve-of-the-week, changing every Monday afternoon - only one machine but this week they had (vegan/dairy free) Orange Dolewhip and (lactose free dairy) Vanilla, which I haven't noticed at other locations.

Ice Cream

So even though the food-and-wine ice cream list didn't directly inspire this, I did end up getting "Peanut Butter Banana Fluff" with rainbow jimmies (they were out of chocolate jimmies!?) and Candied Walnuts. I don't actually have particular nostalgia for Fluffernutter sandwiches (I only remember having them once or twice as a kid) but it had big chunks of banana that were solid enough but not so deep-frozen that you couldn't bite through them (though holding off until finishing some of the ice cream first is probably clever.) The Peanut Butter flavor wasn't all that strong but it definitely wasn't just vanilla.
