Lancaster

I was exploring Bolton Flats WMA, and discovered that there was another Kimball Farm just up Route 70 on the way to Route 2. The location has 8 ice cream windows plus the entire side of the building is for food orders - burgers and seafood, standard New England "Fried Plates", grilled cheese and hotdogs. Convenient, as I was already hoping to grab dinner before ice cream, so I got a cheeseburger and some watermelon before the main event.

While the place is a little smaller than the Westford one, it's still enormous - acres of parking, picnic tables under a tent, more under some trees, small tables under the overhang - this location opened in 2010 with grand plans for an amusement mini-park buildout that didn't happen. Still, it seems to be doing well as several overlapping shops - there's a "KF Café" that opens at 7AM serving breakfast, and later serves lunch, which is inside the Country Store that is open 7AM to 7 or 8PM; there's the ice cream shop itself that's open from 10am until at least 9pm (maybe 10pm, they still had a line at 9 and people arriving, so it may be one of those "keep serving while people keep lining up" things); the grill is also supposed to be open 11am-8pm but it looked like they were also still serving at 8:30 at least. (Possibly their signage hadn't been updated for summer hours yet, but it's already late July.)
Ice Cream Shop

They have the usual cones and cups from "mini" to Large, sundaes, a "doubledae", and an (unexplained) Kimball Special. They have frappes, floats, shakes, and ice cream soda. You can also get whole and half pints, quarts, and half-gallons (the half-gallons may only be available in a couple of mundane flavors though.)
They also had a sign for an Affogato (vanilla-only, or maybe just vanilla-default) separate from the usual ice cream signage - the sign was at the ice cream windows, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was only available when the Café was open to supply the espresso.
They have an interesting range of flavors - "chocolate chocolate truffle" might be their most serious chocolate, but "mocha almond assault" might be their most weaponized flavor. They have "grapenut" which is usually a good choice if you want something really crunchy, and I've only seen it at Tosci's and Eriksons, though Kimball Farm also has "Malted Moo Crunch" and "Honey Comb Crunch" that also sounded interesting. (The latter could be the cereal or the toffee candy and either way it could be very satisfying...)
What I Went With

Since I've reviewed the other ones before, instead of getting my usual "reference" ice cream1 I went with my summer craving, a creamsicle. In this case, an "X-Thick Frappe" with "orange pineapple" ice cream - turns out the orange completely dominates, and using ice cream instead of sherbet matches the "cream" part of creamsicle pretty well, so it did well on flavor and texture. The straw was mostly up to the task, though they did include a spoon as well, and I finished it off on the drive home anyway so it had time to gradually soften further. (I did choose the extra thick version after all.)

My default first-time choice has converged on a large cup, half the most over the top chocolate on the menu, half something crunchy - usually butter crunch - with chocolate jimmies. This lets me see how committed they are to chocolate, check out the range of crunchiness in a lighter flavor, and snark about jimmies vs. sprinkles... ↩
